When do children start talking
Do you see other children the same age as your child that are talking a lot and yours say nothing? ¡relax! When do children start talking vary according to the evolution of each one. Some babies start talking before they are one year old, but there are others who do not say a word for up to 13 months. The most important thing is that you do not obsess with that and as we always say, every child learns at his own pace!
During the first months, babies begin to babble. Then they include more sounds, trying to imitate what they listen and after, they start to say their first words.
Stages of language development
As the Spanish Association of Pediatrics indicates, each child evolves in a different way. However to know if the development of a child's language is normal, it is recommended to take into account what children, in general, are able to do during the first years of life.
- During the first year. Babies communicate from birth. The first ways to communicate are the crying, the laughter, the noises or the gestures. From 2 months on, they begin to babble and over 9 months it is possible that they say their first words, which are usually dad, mom or water, without understanding the meaning. Between 12 and 15 months the child learns by imitation and they start to imitate some sounds or words that they listen. During this age they also have the ability to understand simple commands.
- Between 18 and 24 months old. The child's vocabulary is gradually increasing About 2 years old, they are able to say between 20 and 50 words and they can do some combinations. At this age children understand more complex orders and they are able to follow two-step directions.
- Between 2 and 3 years old. At this stage children know more vocabulary, they understand some verbs and are able to say sentences from three to five words. Many of them understand a variety of simple instructions and it is easier to understand what they say.
- From 3 years old. From this age children can already make sentences longer and more complex and their pronunciation is getting better. So, it is possible to understand almost everything they say.
Each child develops at his own pace. There is no exact time when babies start walking and there is no a specific age when children start talking.
It is not possible to determine exactly when do children start talking, but it is important you control the times and to take into account previous steps to guide you and to know if your child has any problems of development.
According to the Spanish Association of Pediatrics, one in five children learns to speak later than other children with their same age, being speech delay one of the most frequent in the development of the child. In many cases it is difficult to differentiate between what is a normal situation and what is a problem, so do not obsess and if you have any question, you should go to the pediatrician.
We hope this post has solved your doubts and if you have any question, we will be happy to help you!
