Baby colic is one of the most common reasons for a visit to the pediatrician in the first months of the child’s life.
There are some characteristics:
- The baby cries and has irritability episodes and they start and end suddenly,
- Baby colic usually starts in the late afternoon or evening, and they can last for several hours.
- The baby clenches his fingers and arches his back.
- He becomes flushed.
Baby colic has been considered for a long time as natural developmental stage in healthy babies, and it normally goes away on its own around 4 months. In most cases, it shouldn’t becomes a concern, because it does not affect the normal development of the baby. However, it can be very stressful for the parents and they can transmit their anxiety to their infants. Therefore, it’s important to be patient, stay calm and go to the pediatrician if you have any doubt. It is currently thought that colic stems from an imbalance of the intestinal flora. Gut flora is the bacteria combination that live in the digestive tracts, which is gradually acquired by the babies. There are factors as born by cesarean, artificial feeding, taking antibiotics the first few months or smoking which would be a risk factor for the baby’s intestinal flora.
Sergio Negre, Head of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition at the Hospital Quirón of Valencia, who live together with this concern for a long time, says that using analgesics or another medicines as simethycone, do not work for colicky babies. Neither were any changes of the mother’s diet or artificial milk. There are some studies made with probiotics that could be a success, especially with Lactobacillus reuteri strains. In any case, de Doctor says “ To trust on the pediatrician is basic in order to calm the parents”.
Usually, the anxiety that causes these long episodes for the parents is a great concern, and because of their prolonged duration, typically arise doubts about the possibility of having fever or pain somewhere, regardless of their usual colics. The few months of baby's life cause the lack of understanding on parents, primarily in the first-time parents, about the origin of crying and the irritability of the baby . Therefore it is advisable for the parents to consult their pediatrician to perform a proper diagnostic , discarding or identifying other possible complications in the baby's health .
The Doctor Sergio Negre says very convinced about the great utility of new technologies that helps parents in the children’s care: "The use of an intelligent device that would be continuously monitoring the temperature and pulse of the baby, will facilitate a correct and fast diagnostic of the baby colic . If this monitoring was carried out easily at home , parents may recognize this disorder , identifying the source of the pain of their baby and may consult with the pediatrician how is the best way to relieve the pain. In addition , they could also identify other serious diseases that often are confused with baby colic, delaying medical intervention."
